Around Austin photo contest 2/7/11

It’s the last week in our month-long contest for a chance to win a free Gorillapod tripod! This week, we have photos from Rooted photographers Cassandra Adamson and Peter Gaunt, along with submitted photos from Lacey Dowden, Reagan Hackleman and Robert Jamail. So far, the only photographer who’s in the running to win the tripod is Lacey Dowden. All the photographers who submitted pictures this week have a chance to get in the drawing if they get 15 votes or win the contest. Happy voting! We’ll announce the winner Friday.

First, Cassandra’s shots:

Photo 1: A squirrel sits completely immobile in a tree, ignoring the photographer below trying to get its attention.

Photo 2: A dog surveys his domain from above.

Photo 3: The main building on the Saint Edward’s University campus mimics the oncoming sunset with an orange-lit tower and blue-toned base.

Photo 4: A view from a hill on St. Edward’s campus offers a new perspective on the familiar cityscape.

Now, on to Peter’s shots:

Photo 5: The sun lights up an aley along Red River St. that is lined with dumpters on a Sunday afternoon.

Photo 6: The sun peaks through an old bloom on a tree in a neighborhood in south Austin.

Photo 7: Leaves soak up the water of Waller Creek in downtown Austin.

That’s all for the Rooted photographers, now on to our submitted photos. The first are from Lacey Dowden:

Photo 8: The sun is caught setting between the trees on a disc golf course in Leander.

Photo 9: One of the marble cows in the Arboretum in northwest Austin on Austin’s Snow Day.

Next, we have a submission from Reagan Hackleman:

Photo 10: This icy image was captured Thursday night at Auditorium Shores.

Our next entry comes from Robert Jamail:

Photo 11: A cat at home in north Austin.

That’s all for this week! Good luck to all the photographers who submitted photos this week. Here’s an overview of the contest:

Winning photographers will be placed into a drawing for a prize (more on that later). There are two ways to get entries. The first is by having the winning photo of the week, which gets you two entries into the drawing. You can also get a single entry in the drawing if your photo gets more than 15 votes during the contest week. So, if you get 20 votes for a photo one week and your photo has the most votes overall, you’ll get a total of three entries into the contest.

There are some rules. The photos have to be from around Austin, which means either in Austin or the outlying area. Photos should be submitted to photo@rootedaustin.com in JPEG format and at least 1,000 pixels wide. Photographers can send in multiple pictures, but only one of them can get an entry into the drawing by passing the 15-vote threshold. For example, if you send us three pictures and each one gets 15 or more votes, you get one entry. If you win, you will always get two entries. In the case of a tie, the Rooted team will vote to break it. As for the voting, it can be done either here on the blog, on Facebook or via Twitter. Voters can vote once per method per week. After four week-long contests, we’ll tally up the entries and put them into a hat. Whoever we pick wins the prize!

Speaking of the prize, let’s talk about what you can win in this contest. This time, we’re giving away a Gorillapod SLR-Zoom tripod. What is that, you ask? Let us show you:

As you can see, the Gorillapod is an awesome tripod that can do a lot more than your typical set-up. Put it on a mountain, wrap it around a tree or anywhere else where your normal tripod won’t go. This little guy can hold more than six pounds of weight safely, so you won’t have to worry about anything happening to your camera. It’s a great tool to put in your photography toolbox.

Also, just wanted to say I have a similar tripod and it’s awesome! Not sure if it’s the same brand and it may be slightly smaller but still super cool. Great prize for whoever wins it!

Apologize for the noob question. Could you tell me what this blog template is? I really love it. Or is it custom one, maybe? I believe it can be a great option for adsense too. I’d really appreciate it if you are able\will tell me about this. Thanks.
